Why We Do It
Feedback from the husband of a recent student:
"I’m not sure what you guys went over on Saturday at the Quick & Dirty class, but my wife came home really jazzed-up about the training. She was showing me the ‘crouch stance’ and showing me how to clear a jam while moving all around the house. She was really into it!
Thanks for making it fun for her to learn something she thought she wouldn’t like!"
Feedback like this is better than Christmas for us, and it's why we do what we do.

Pull The Trigger - Part II
For those who may have thought the last 'Pull The Trigger' post was a bit harsh, we offer this. The video is graphic, but we train for graphic situations.
Deputy Kyle Dinkheller
Our 'no mercy' take on the earlier home invasion story was not meant to give you visions of Jonathan and I running around a dark gymnasium in skeleton costumes chasing the Karate Kid. Rather, let's consider that one man's 'mercy' is another man's indecisiveness. One man's mercy is another man's enabling of a criminal's violent act. We might say that it was Officer Dinkheller's 'mercy' that stole him from his wife, daughter and unborn son. I dont' think it was mercy, as in the case of what my friend's buddy thought he was showing his home invader and potential child rapist. In this instance, it was fear. Officer Dinkheller was drilled with the fear of lawsuits for engaging suspects too aggressively.
Are you feeling compassion for the person who breaks into your home and tries to rape your daughter? Are you afraid of being sued by the man who's shooting at you with an M1 Carbine? Perceived mercy, fear...what's keeping YOU from pulling the trigger?

Pull The Trigger
I sat down recently for a drink with an old friend. Pulling his chair up, he said, 'You're never going to believe what just happened to my buddy.'
'Okay', I said. 'Try me.'
'Well, he told me that he woke up in the middle of the night to some strange sounds. He got out of bed and walked into his bedroom doorway. Peeking his head into the hallway he saw a shadowy figure enter the bedroom of his four-year-old daughter.'
I froze. I have toddlers, and this is my worst nightmare.
'I know, I know', he continued, seeming to sense my blood pressure rising. 'Well, he had a shotgun in the bedroom so he went back to get it. The intruder must have heard him getting the gun, because when my friend came back to the hallway he saw the guy quickly walking out of his daughter's bedroom and down the hallway in the other direction. He then chased the guy through the house with his gun and cornered him in the kitchen.'
Good, I thought, here it comes.
'Well,' he gave me a look that told me not to get too excited. 'He hesitated. I guess he thought that he had done enough by just cornering the guy, so he held him at gun point and called the police.'
I knew there was more, but hoping for a happy ending I asked, 'So they put the guy away?'
'No.' He was actually visibly shaken as he continued. 'The guy got out on bail and came back to my buddy's house the very next day. He didn't break in, though, he just walked up and down the sidewalk in front of my friend's house...all day...knowing my buddy couldn't do a thing about it.'
I was shocked. I thought about what that must have done to his friend...his wife...his little girl. I thought about the few seconds that this guy actually stood in the toddler's room. What his plans were, what was going through his mind, what he was about to do...and knowing that he would probably have more than a few seconds to try it again, if not in this house than in another.
'I know you're starting this gun business and everything, so I thought you should know that people out there really need to learn this stuff. My buddy's just tore up about what this creep is going to do next. When you teach people, teach them to pull the trigger.'
~~~
As a Christian and a former pacifist, I can guess pretty well what was going through the man's mind when he held the intruder at gunpoint. 'Well, he's no harm to me now. I'll have mercy on him. I'll let him live one more day. Every one needs a second chance.' That's what would be going through my mind, anyway, and it's probably true of anyone with a conscience. No one in their right mind wants to take a life. At Force Response, we teach that if you can leave a violent situation without firing a shot, do it. But something about this story got to me. A line had been crossed, and a family now lives in fear and torment. I believe there is a time for mercy, for second chances. When someone breaks into my home and enters my daughter's bedroom, that time is over. Pull the trigger.
